My dis/advantages vs. most other SWEs, I perceive:
-
building things that are safe / reliable / principled /
well-thought-through
- making tradeoffs in legible/numerate ways
- picking up new tools quickly
- sciencey stuff (math, esp. stats, physical sciences)
-
memorizing large bags of tricks for systems I expect won't be relevant
to me long-term (e.g. current-gen AI prompting, query optimization for
an in-house database)
- making user interfaces normal people would consider beautiful.
I'm currently blessed with the ability to be picky. I'm currently
seeking:
- part-time or contract work,
- in Seattle or remote,
- at small (<10-person) companies
-
that solve problems I intuitively appreciate.
(Positive examples: cloud file storage, statistical analysis tools,
automatic sprinkler control systems, crafting financial instruments.
Negative examples: roughly anything around advertising, social
media, or regulatory compliance.)
